Earthquake in Afganistan, At least 20 people dead
A 6.3 magnitude earthquake struck Afghanistan on Monday morning, at least 20 people were killed and 250 above are injured. The city of Mazar-e-Sharif, the capital of Balkh province, was reportedly the hardest hit. Samangan province also suffered significant damage.
According to the US Geological Survey (USGS), the quake struck at a depth of 28 kilometers near Mazar-e-Sharif, a city with a population of approximately 5.23 lakh. Samim Joyinda, a spokesman for the Samangan provincial health department, said the death and injured figures were based on hospital reports received as of Monday morning.
The USGS has issued an orange alert on its pager system, stating that significant casualties are possible and the disaster could be widespread. Alerts of this level typically require a regional or national response.
