Covid cases in Singapore, Hong Kong – Southeast Asian countries such as Singapore and Hong Kong are seeing a rise in COVID-19 cases, prompting health officials to remain vigilant and advise people to take precautions. According to Nation Thailand, there were 31 severe COVID-19 cases in Hong Kong in the week ending May 3. In Singapore, the Ministry of Health and Communicable Diseases Agency said the estimated number of COVID-19 cases for the week of April 27 to May 3 was 14,200, up from 11,100 in the week before that.

In a press release, Edwin Tsui, controller of Hong Kong’s Health Protection Centre, said, “Since the restoration of normalcy, Hong Kong has seen a cycle of active COVID-19 cases every 6 to 9 months. We expect that the level of COVID-19 activity will remain at the maximum level for at least the next few weeks.”

What was said in the review meeting
On May 19, a review meeting chaired by the Director General of Health Services, comprising experts from the National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) Emergency Medical Relief Division (EMR), Disaster Management Cell, Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) and Central Government Hospitals concluded that the current COVID-19 situation in India is under control. As of May 19, 2025, the number of active COVID-19 cases in India is 257 which is a very low figure considering the large population of the country. Almost all of these cases are mild, not requiring hospitalisation. However, the Union Health Ministry is constantly monitoring the situation and ensuring that appropriate measures are taken to protect public health.

Which variant caused increased worries?
According to the information received, the increase in COVID-19 cases in Southeast Asia is mainly due to the JN.1 variant which is a descendant of the Omicron BA.2.86 variant. According to the WHO, the JN.1 variant has about 30 mutations and among them LF.7 and NB.1.8 are the 2 most common variants in the recently reported cases .
