Sri Lanka’s Unforgettable 952: Highest Runs in Test Cricket by a Team
Sri Lanka’s run chase in 1997 changed history forever. At Premadasa Stadium they batted India on a wicket so flat that bowlers looked lost. Sanath Jayasuriya smashed 340, hitting ball in every direction, while Roshan Mahanama ground out 225. The two put on 576 for the second wicket, a stand some old timers called unbelievable. Veteran Aravinda de Silva also chipped in with a ton, so total soared to 952 for 6 declared. It took two days of hard work, with batters staying at crease, sipping water and breaking only for short drinks. That 952 still stands tall, and many still doubt if anything can beat it. Some bowlers claim they never seen such lifeless pitch anywhere, others say Sri Lankan outfit simply was in peak form. Whatever the reason, that innings marks the highest score we seen in Test cricket.
