Assam Floods: Over 7 lakh People Affected: The flood situation in Assam improved marginally on Thursday, while other northeastern states saw more improvement. With two more deaths in Assam, the death toll in seven states of the region, excluding Sikkim.
The situation in the northeastern states remains worrisome due to continuous rains. In Assam, nine major rivers, including the Brahmaputra, are flowing above the danger mark. The Barak River in the Cachar district has crossed the red mark and the water level in the tributary rivers has also increased tremendously. About seven lakh people have been affected due to floods in Assam. The situation in Manipur has improved a little. But relief and rescue work is continuing.
Relief and rescue operations were intensified in North Sikkim after the weather cleared a bit on Thursday morning, and 199 people stranded there were rescued safely, including two Americans. The Indian Air Force has deployed four MI-17 and two Cheetah helicopters for relief operations. Through these, tourists, locals, and military personnel stranded in the remote and severely affected areas of Chatan were evacuated. Along with this, 6000 kg of relief material was also delivered to the affected areas.
Assam Flood-affected area
According to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) report, more than 5.60 lakh people have been affected by floods and rains in 19 districts of Assam. More than 6.79 lakh people were affected in 21 districts on Wednesday. According to the ASDMA report, more than 19,345 hectares of crop land were submerged in flood water in 1,433 villages of 19 districts. The report said that more than 4,35,825 domestic animals have also been affected by the ongoing floods.
On the other hand, with the death of two more people on Wednesday in Assam, the death toll due to floods and landslides has risen to 19. One person is missing in the Cachar district. According to officials, seven lakh people have been affected in 21 districts due to the floods. The floods have affected a total of 1,494 villages, including 339 villages in Sribhumi, 189 in Nagaon, 166 in Cachar, and 156 in Hailakandi. About 14977.99 hectares of crop area are affected by the floods, and 5,15,737 animals have been affected.
