Govt announces up to 50% cut in toll rates on these highways

Toll Price Cut Up To 50%: Fare on National Highways with Bridges And Tunnels: The government has reduced toll rates by up to 50 per cent for stretches of national highways that have structures such as tunnels, bridges, flyovers, or elevated roads. This move will reduce travel costs for motorists. The collection of user charges at toll plazas on national highways is done by the National Highway Fee Rules, 2008. The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has amended the 2008 rules and notified a new method or formula for calculating toll prices.

What is said in the notification

According to the notification issued on Wednesday, “The toll rate for the use of a structure or stretch of a national highway containing a structure shall be calculated by adding ten times the length of the structure or structures to the length of the section of the national highway excluding the length of the structure, or five times the total length of the section of the national highway, whichever is less.” Here, ‘structure’ means a free-standing bridge, tunnel, flyover, or elevated highway.

what are the rules now?

As per the current rules, commuters pay ten times the regular toll for every kilometre of structure on national highways. A senior official of the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) said the current toll calculation formula is aimed at compensating for the high construction cost associated with such infrastructure. The revised notification issued by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has reduced the toll rate by up to 50 per cent for stretches such as flyovers, underpasses, and tunnels, the official said.
