Indian Railways to Install CCTV Cameras in Coaches to Enhance Passenger Safety
Indian Railways To Install AI-powered CCTV Cameras In Trains: To further strengthen the safety of passengers, the Railways has decided to install CCTV cameras in all 74,000 train coaches and 15,000 locomotives (engines) in the country. Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnav approved this decision in a meeting held on July 12.
Implemented nationwide after a successful trial in the Northern Railway
In a statement issued by the Railway Ministry, it was said that the decision to install CCTV cameras in all coaches and engines was taken after a successful trial in the Northern Railway, where feedback was sought from passengers and railway employees on this pilot project. Railways will install 4 dome-type CCTV cameras in every coach. There will be two cameras on every gate of the coach.
Identification of suspicious activities will become easier
Apart from this, 6 CCTV cameras will be installed in every engine. Their position will be in the front, rear, and both sides of the engine. One dome camera and two desk-mounted microphones will also be installed in each cabin (front and rear) of the locomotive in the engine. Railways will also use AI (Artificial Intelligence) on CCTV data, which will make the identification of suspicious activities easier.
Purpose of installing CCTV cameras in trains
The ministry said that this step reflects the railways’ efforts towards modernization and their commitment to a safe, secure, and passenger-friendly travel experience. After the installation of CCTV cameras, strict monitoring of theft, molestation, robbery, and activities of anti-social elements in trains will be possible. Strict action will now be possible against those who damage railway property.
