1,090 police, security and civil defence and civil defence personnel have been awarded bravery
Odisha 9 People Awarded Bravery Medals On Independence Day : On the occasion of Independence Day 2025, a total of 1,090 police, security and civil defence and civil defence personnel have been awarded bravery and service medals. 233 personnel from across the country have been awarded the Saharikata Padak, 99 with the Rashtrapati Padak for Distinguished Service and 758 with the Commendable Service Medal. Out of the 233 recipients of the Saharikata Padak, 226 are police personnel, 6 are firefighters and one each is a custodian and a civil service employee.
A total of 9 people from Odisha have been awarded the Bravery Medal. Similarly, 2 people have received the President’s Medal for Distinguished Service and 11 people have received the Commendable Service Medal. 2 firemen from Odisha have received the Commendable Service Medal. Similarly, 2 workers from the Civil Defence and Home Affairs Department of the state have also received the Commendable Service Medal. In the field of Reformatory Services, one person has received the President’s Medal for Distinguished Service and 2 people have received the Commendable Service Medal.
The personnel who received the gallantry medals are Police SI Amresh Chandra Narendra, Constable Jitendra Kumar Nayak, OPF personnel Arjun Mallick and Sutharishthir Mallick, Havildar Ashwani Kumar Bagh and Commandos Dambarudhar Bhoi, Naveen Kumar Sahu, Pradeep Nrestha and Abhimanyu Majhi. Similarly, Additional Superintendent of Police of Odisha Police Ravindra Kumar Panda and Commandant Naresh Kumar Patel have been selected for the President’s Medal for Distinguished Service.
Eleven people from Odisha have been nominated for the Commendable Service Medal on the occasion of Independence Day. They are Assistant Inspector General (AIG) Maheshwar Sethi, Additional SP Pradeep Kumar Pradhan, Additional SP Debendra Narayan Dash, DSP Ashish Kumar Rout, Inspector A Srinivas Dora, DSP Hemamalini Nayak, Commandant Surya Narayan Mallick, Inspector Santosh Kumar Mirdha, ASI Arun Kumar Samant, ASI Arvind Das and Constable Chinmayi Rout.
The Medal of Valor is awarded for acts of exceptional bravery and exemplary bravery, such as saving lives, preventing crime, or apprehending criminals. The medal is awarded after assessing the risk involved in the performance of the duties and responsibilities of the personnel involved.
Out of the 233 personnel who received the gallantry medals, 54 personnel from Left Wing Extremism-affected areas, 152 from Jammu and Kashmir region, 3 from the North-East and 24 personnel from other regions have been honored for their bravery.
The President’s Distinguished Service Medal is awarded for an exceptional record in the field of service, and the Meritorious Service Medal is awarded for distinguished service characterized by resourcefulness and devotion to duty.
Of the 99 personnel who have received the President’s Medal for Distinguished Service, 89 are police personnel, 5 firefighters, 3 civil services and maintenance personnel and 2 correctional service personnel. Similarly, of the 758 personnel who have received the Meritorious Service Medal, 635 are police personnel, 51 firefighters, 41 civil services and maintenance personnel and 31 correctional service personnel.
