Noel Tata Becomes The Board Of Director Of Tata Sons: Tata Group company Tata Sons has appointed Noel Tata as a director on the board at its 107th Annual General Meeting (AGM) on August 14. This is the first general meeting of Tata Sons after the death of Ratan Tata.
Noel Tata has been the chairman of Tata Trusts since the death of Ratan Tata in October last year. He has now officially joined the board of Tata Sons.
Noel Tata has been appointed by the Tata Trust. This trust holds a 66% stake in Tata Sons and takes important decisions regarding the functioning of the Tata Group.

66-year-old Noel Tata became the chairman of Tata Trust in October. He was already a trustee of two family trusts. Noel is Ratan Tata’s stepbrother. After Ratan Tata’s death on 9 October, Noel was the only contender. Although his brother Jimmy’s name was also in discussion, he had already retired. Noel’s name was agreed upon in the trust meeting in Mumbai.
Noel is the son of Naval Tata’s second wife
Noel is the son of Naval Tata’s second wife, Simone. Ratan Tata and Jimmy Tata are the children of Naval Tata and his first wife Sooni.
Noel started his career with Tata International
Noel has studied at the University of Sussex. He started his career with Tata International. In 1999, he was made the managing director of the group’s retail branch, Trent. It was started by his mother, Simone. In 2010-11, he was made the chairman of Tata International.
After this, discussions started on making him the chairman of the group. Meanwhile, Cyrus Mistry himself discussed being appointed chairman of the Tata Group. After this, Cyrus Mistry was removed from the post of chairman of Tata Sons, and Ratan Tata took charge of the group. In 2018, he was made the vice chairman of Titan, and in 2017, he was included on the board of the trust.
Noel Tata is calm and composed like Ratan Tata
Noel is known for his calm and composed demeanor, like his elder brother Ratan Tata. His specialty is his low-key leadership style, which contrasts with Ratan Tata’s more public approach. While Ratan had experience working in the aviation and automobile industries, Noel lacks experience.
When the search for Ratan Tata’s successor was going on in the group in 2011, in an interview given to a foreign media, Ratan Tata had said that Noel lacked experience. Therefore, his name was not considered. Ultimately, his brother-in-law Cyrus Mistry replaced him. After Mistry’s departure, TCS chief N Chandrasekaran became the chairman of Tata Sons.
