Mahalakshmi Vrat
Every year, Mahalaxmi Vrat is observed from Bhado Shukla Ashtami Tithi to Ashwin Krishna Ashtami. The 16-day long Mahalaxmi Vrat is starting from 31st August and will end on 14th September. According to the legend, a poor Brahmin lived in a village. He was a great devotee of Lord Vishnu and used to worship him with devotion every day. Pleased with the devotion of the poor Brahmin, Lord Vishnu appeared before him and asked him to ask for a boon. That Brahmin expressed his desire to have Lakshmi Ji reside in his house. Lord Vishnu told him that a woman comes in front of the temple to pound cow dung cakes. You invite her to your house. That woman is Lakshmi Ji and when she comes to your house, your house will be filled with wealth and grains.
Following Lord Vishnu’s advice, the Brahmin sat in front of the temple. After some time, Goddess Lakshmi came to pound cow dung cakes. The Brahmin requested Lakshmi to come to his house. Lakshmi understood that all this was said by Lord Vishnu. Then she told the Brahmin to observe Mahalakshmi fast for 16 days. Then after offering water to the moon on the 16th day, all his wishes would be fulfilled.
The poor Brahmin obeyed Lakshmi ji and observed the Mahalakshmi fast for 16 days as per the rituals. Then on the 16th day, he offered water to the moon and asked for his wish. Due to the Mahalakshmi fast, Lakshmi ji fulfilled his wish and filled his house with wealth and grains.
