New strict rules implemented in CBSE Board, 75% attendance mandatory for 10th-12th

The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has issued new guidelines that make 75% attendance mandatory for all students appearing in the Class 10 and 12 board examinations starting from the 2026 session. According to the board, students failing to meet this minimum attendance requirement will not be allowed to sit for the exams, regardless of other academic performance.

In alignment with the National Education Policy 2020, CBSE has also made internal assessment a compulsory component of the final board result. The board emphasized that regular classroom attendance is crucial not just for academic learning but also for continuous internal evaluation. Students who fail to meet the internal assessment standards over the two academic years will not have their board exam results declared.

Students have also been given the option to choose additional subjects — up to two for Class 10 and one for Class 12 — but they must be studied continuously for two academic years. These subjects must be supported by the school’s teaching and infrastructure facilities. Students failing or repeating in these subjects can appear again as private candidates, but only if they meet all the new eligibility conditions. CBSE officials say the move is aimed at ensuring better preparation, academic discipline, and equal opportunities for all students.
