Massive 50-metre-deep Sinkhole Swallows Bangkok Road Near Hospital; Vehicles Fall In, Evacuations Ordered
Road Collapse In Bangkok Creates Massive Sinkhole: A massive 50-metre-deep sinkhole suddenly opened on a busy road in central Bangkok early Wednesday morning, causing widespread panic and chaos. The incident occurred around 7 a.m. near a hospital, where the ground gave way without warning, swallowing vehicles and toppling electric poles. According to Bangkok Governor Chadchart Sittipant, three vehicles fell into the sinkhole, but no casualties have been reported so far. Videos captured the terrifying moment the road caved in, with water gushing from ruptured pipes and traffic grinding to a halt.
Authorities responded swiftly by sealing off the area, stopping all traffic, and evacuating nearby residents and hospital patients as a safety precaution. Eyewitness footage shows a car trapped as the ground collapses further, highlighting the sudden and destructive nature of the event. Officials believe the sinkhole was triggered by ongoing construction work at a nearby railway station, which may have weakened the soil structure beneath the road.
Sinkholes are large, sudden depressions in the ground caused by the erosion or removal of soil beneath the surface, often due to natural processes or human activities. Bangkok has seen an increase in infrastructure stress in recent months, with a powerful earthquake in March causing the collapse of an under-construction building, killing 92 people. Wednesday’s incident has reignited public concern about the city’s construction safety and emergency preparedness.
