UK’s Nothing To Make Smartphones In India: Will Become Global Export Hub: London-based smartphone maker Nothing has announced a major strategic shift by establishing its budget-friendly sub-brand CMF as an independent Indian subsidiary, reinforcing India’s growing role as a global tech manufacturing hub. The company has also entered into a joint venture with Indian electronics giant Optiemus Infracom, marking a pivotal moment for both brands.

As part of the collaboration, Nothing and Optiemus will invest $100 million (approx. ₹887.77 crore) over the next three years to expand manufacturing, R&D, and operations in India. The move is expected to generate over 1,800 new jobs, further strengthening India’s electronics manufacturing ecosystem.

India Becomes Global Hub for Nothing and CMF

India will now serve as the global base for manufacturing, operations, and research for both Nothing and CMF. Since its entry into the Indian market, Nothing has invested more than $200 million (₹1,775 crore), signaling the country’s critical role in the company’s long-term strategy.

CMF, launched in 2023, has quickly gained traction in the budget smartphone and wearables market, particularly with devices priced under $200. This aligns well with market trends — according to IDC, over 42% of smartphones sold in India in Q2 2025 were in the $100–$200 price range.

Nothing CEO Carl Pei recently met with India’s Electronics and IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, sharing a photo of the meeting on X (formerly Twitter). Pei emphasized India’s pivotal role in shaping the future of the smartphone industry and reiterated the company’s commitment to deepening its roots in the country.

CMF Poised to Become India’s First Global Smartphone Brand

The joint venture not only boosts India’s status in global tech manufacturing but also positions CMF to emerge as India’s first global smartphone brand. With localized production and a globally competitive pricing strategy, CMF aims to tap into both domestic and international markets.

This development underscores India’s growing appeal to global tech players as a base for innovation, manufacturing, and export.
