Why Was Gandhi’s Statue Vandalized In London, And Who Did It? A statue of Mahatma Gandhi in London’s Tavistock Square was vandalized just days before the annual Gandhi Jayanti celebrations on October 2. Metropolitan Police and officials from the local Camden Council said they were investigating the incident.

The Indian High Commission strongly condemned the incident. The Indian mission stated that local authorities have been informed of the incident, while High Commission officials are on site to restore the monument.

What did the Indian High Commission say?
The Indian High Commission in London said in a statement on social media, the Indian High Commission is deeply saddened by the incident of vandalism of the statue of Mahatma Gandhi installed at Tavistock Square and strongly condemns it.

“This is not just an act of vandalism but a violent attack on the idea of non-violence and the legacy of Mahatma Gandhi, three days before the International Day of Non-Violence. We have seriously taken up the matter with the local authorities for immediate action, and our team is already at the site and coordinating with the authorities to restore the statue,” the mission said.
The United Nations has designated Gandhi Jayanti as the International Day of Non-Violence and every year on 2 October, floral tributes are laid at the memorial in London and Gandhiji’s favourite hymns are sung.

Earlier this year, in March, pro-Khalistan protesters demonstrated near Chatham House during External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar’s visit to the United Kingdom. Protesters gathered outside the building, holding flags and chanting slogans. During his visit, External Affairs Minister Jaishankar held discussions with UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, Foreign Secretary David Lammy, and several other senior leaders.

India strongly condemned the incident. In a statement, the Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson said that India condemns the abuse of democratic freedoms by such elements and expects the host government to fully discharge its diplomatic obligations in such cases.
A Foreign Ministry spokesperson said, “We have seen footage of the security breach during the Foreign Minister’s visit to the UK. We condemn the provocative actions of separatists. We expect the host government to fully fulfill its diplomatic obligations in such cases.”
