9 Migrant Workers Killed in Steel Arch Collapse at Ennore Thermal Power Plant in Chennai
Tamil Nadu Tragedy: 9 Workers Killed As Steel Arch Collapses At Ennore Thermal Plant Site: In a tragic incident, nine construction workers lost their lives and at least two others were seriously injured after a steel arch collapsed at the Ennore Thermal Power Plant construction site in Chennai’s Ennore area on Tuesday. All the victims are migrant workers from North India, primarily from Assam and surrounding regions.
The incident occurred when a 30-foot-high steel arch suddenly gave way, crashing down on the workers below. Panic ensued as others on site rushed to help. Rescue operations were launched immediately, and emergency teams worked with great difficulty to retrieve the workers buried under the heavy debris.
According to officials, more than ten workers sustained serious injuries. The injured were rushed to Stanley Medical College and Hospital in North Chennai, where they are currently receiving treatment. One of the injured workers is reported to be in critical condition.
Dr. J. Radhakrishnan, Secretary of the Tamil Nadu Electricity Board and Chairman of Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation (TANGEDCO), confirmed the deaths and stated:
“An unfortunate incident occurred at the Ennore Thermal Power construction site where a steel arch collapsed and killed nine people. These people were from Assam and nearby areas. One person has been injured. BHEL officials are present at the site.”
