Renowned Classical Singer Pandit Chhannulal Mishra Passes Away at 88 in Mirzapur

Padma Vibhushan Pandit Chhannulal Mishra Passes Away At Age 98: India mourns the loss of one of its most celebrated classical vocalists, Pandit Chhannulal Mishra, who passed away early Thursday morning at 4:15 a.m. at his residence in Mirzapur, Uttar Pradesh. He was 88.

His daughter, Namrata Mishra, confirmed the news, stating that his last rites will be performed in Varanasi, a city deeply associated with his musical and spiritual journey.

Recent Health Complications

Pandit Mishra had been battling multiple health issues in recent weeks. Around three weeks ago, he suffered a minor heart attack and was immediately admitted to the emergency department of Banaras Hindu University (BHU) hospital. During his stay, doctors diagnosed him with a chest infection and anemia. After receiving treatment for nearly three weeks, he was discharged on Friday.

Following his discharge, his family brought him to Mirzapur, where he was admitted to the Ramakrishna Seva Mission Hospital in the Ojhalapul area. Medical experts, including Medical College Principal Prof. Sanjeev Kumar Singh and Assistant Professor Dr. Pankaj Kumar Pandey, visited him and reviewed his treatment history from BHU. They provided additional health advice to his daughter and consulted with hospital staff about his condition.

Unfortunately, despite ongoing care, Pandit Mishra’s health deteriorated, leading to his peaceful demise early Thursday morning.

A Titan of Indian Classical Music

Pandit Chhannulal Mishra was a torchbearer of the Kirana and Banaras gharanas, known for his deep and emotive renditions of khayal, thumri, dadra, and bhajans. His performances transcended generations and geographical boundaries, earning him reverence in both scholarly and popular circles.

Over the years, he received numerous accolades, including the Padma Bhushan and Padma Vibhushan, for his unparalleled contributions to Indian classical music. His voice, steeped in devotion and tradition, was considered a spiritual experience for listeners.

A Deep Personal Connection

Professor Sanjeev Kumar Singh, who had a long-standing relationship with the maestro, expressed his sorrow, saying, “Panditji was not just a legend in Indian classical music but also a warm and wise human being. It was my privilege to know him personally. We had hoped for his recovery, but fate had other plans.”
