PM Modi Inaugurates Phase 1 of Navi Mumbai International Airport, Metro Line-3 Phase 2; Launches Mumbai One App & Skill Program
Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the first phase of the Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA) on Wednesday, marking a significant milestone in India’s aviation and infrastructure development. Built at a cost of ₹19,650 crore, the airport is set to enhance connectivity and boost trade and tourism in Mumbai, Pune, and the Konkan region.
Spread across 1,160 hectares, the NMIA is India’s largest greenfield airport project developed under the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model. It is the second international airport in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) and is expected to ease congestion at the existing Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport.
During the event, PM Modi emphasized the airport’s role in driving economic growth. “This project will strengthen logistics, create employment, and open up new opportunities for regional development,” he said.
Metro Connectivity Gets a Boost
The Prime Minister also inaugurated Phase 2 of Mumbai Metro Line-3, extending from Acharya Atre Chowk to Cuffe Parade. The newly completed Mumbai Metro Line-3 (Aqua Line), with a total investment of ₹37,270 crore, is a major leap in transforming urban transport in the city. Phase 2 alone was constructed at a cost of ₹12,200 crore.
“This metro line will reduce travel time, cut down emissions, and enhance ease of living for Mumbaikars,” PM Modi noted while dedicating the project to the nation.
Launch of Mumbai One App
To further enhance urban mobility, PM Modi launched the Mumbai One app, a digital platform offering integrated mobile ticketing for multiple public transport systems in the city. The app is designed to simplify commuting and provide real-time travel updates, thereby encouraging the use of public transportation.
Skill Development Gets a Push
In a significant move to bridge the gap between education and industry, the Prime Minister also inaugurated the Short-Term Employability Program (STEP). The initiative, spearheaded by the Department of Skills, Employment, Entrepreneurship, and Innovation, Maharashtra, is being implemented across 400 Government ITIs and 150 government technical higher secondary schools.
The STEP initiative aims to align skill training with real-world industry requirements, ultimately enhancing employability for youth across the state.
With the inauguration of the NMIA, Metro Line 3 Phase 2, and multiple digital and skill-based initiatives, Mumbai is witnessing a comprehensive infrastructural and developmental transformation aimed at making the city more connected, sustainable, and future-ready.
