Strong Earthquake Triggers Tsunami Warning in Philippines; Panic Grips Mindanao as Tremors Continue Across Nation

A powerful earthquake rocked the southern Philippines on Friday, causing widespread panic and prompting authorities to issue a tsunami warning for coastal areas. The tremors were strongly felt in the Mindanao region, with residents rushing out of buildings and into open spaces for safety.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) reported the earthquake struck at a depth of 10 kilometers, while the European-Mediterranean Seismological Center (EMSC) recorded it at 62 kilometers deep, highlighting inconsistencies in the data being analyzed in real time.

Tsunami Alert Issued

Authorities have urged residents in central and southern coastal regions to move to higher ground or evacuate if necessary. While no major damage has been reported yet, the situation remains tense.

Phivolcs warned that tsunami waves over 1 meter could hit coastal communities within the next two hours. Meanwhile, the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center in Honolulu stated that waves as high as 3 meters (10 feet) could potentially strike areas within a 300-kilometer radius of the quake’s epicenter.
