India’s Electronics Boom: Mobile Manufacturing Soars as Exports Hit ₹2 Lakh Crore

India Becomes World’s Second-Largest Mobile Phone Manufacturer: India’s electronics and mobile phone manufacturing sector has seen unprecedented growth over the past decade, emerging as a key pillar of the country’s industrial and economic transformation. From a modest electronics production value of ₹1.9 trillion in 2014-15, the industry is projected to touch ₹11.3 trillion by 2024-25 — nearly a sixfold increase.

A standout success story within this sector is mobile phone manufacturing. India, once a marginal player, is now the world’s second-largest mobile phone producer, with exports skyrocketing from just ₹1,500 crore in 2014-15 to a projected ₹2 lakh crore in 2024-25.

Production Boom and Employment Growth

Driven by flagship government initiatives like the Production-Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme, Electronics Component Manufacturing Scheme (ECMS), and Scheme for Promotion of Manufacturing of Electronic Components and Semiconductors (SPECS), the sector has attracted significant investment and fostered innovation.

Over the past ten years, the industry has created 2.5 million direct jobs, transforming it into a major employment generator. The number of mobile production units has increased from just 2 in 2014 to over 300 today, collectively manufacturing over 330 million phones annually.

Global Confidence in India

India has become a global hub for electronics manufacturing, attracting over $4 billion in Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) since 2020-21. The United States, UAE, Netherlands, UK, and Italy are now among the top export destinations for Indian electronics.

The Mobile Revolution

Smartphones have become central to Indian life — with more than 85% of households owning a device, they are critical tools for education, digital payments, e-governance, entertainment, and connectivity. The sector’s exponential growth underscores India’s capability to produce for both domestic consumption and international markets.

Mobile phone production alone has surged from ₹18,000 crore in 2014-15 to a projected ₹5.45 lakh crore in 2024-25. In the first five months of FY 2025-26 alone, mobile exports have already crossed ₹1 lakh crore, setting the stage for a record-breaking year.

India Mobile Congress 2025: A Global Stage

The sector’s achievements will be on full display at the 9th India Mobile Congress (IMC) 2025, which will be inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi. The event will host over 1.5 lakh visitors, 7,000 global delegates, and 400 companies from 150 countries.

The Congress will showcase more than 1,600 innovative use cases, spanning emerging technologies such as 5G, 6G, artificial intelligence, smart mobility, cybersecurity, and green technology — emphasizing India’s ambition to lead in future tech ecosystems.

Looking Ahead: A $500 Billion Vision

With strong policy backing, increasing global trust, and continuous innovation, India is positioning itself as a global Electronic System Design and Manufacturing (ESDM) hub, as envisioned in the National Electronics Policy (NEP) 2019.

The long-term vision? To build a $500 billion domestic electronics ecosystem by 2030-31, cementing India’s position as a global leader in electronics and mobile manufacturing.
