According to mythology, there once lived a righteous king named Hem, who, after many years of penance, was blessed with a son. The joy of the royal family knew no bounds, but it was short-lived.
An astrologer, after examining the newborn’s horoscope, made a troubling prediction —
“The prince is destined to die on the tenth day after his marriage.”
To protect his son, King Hem decided never to let him marry. The prince was sent away to live in isolation where no women resided. However, fate had other plans.
The young prince met a girl, and they fell in love. They married secretly in a Gandharva (celestial) ceremony. As predicted, on the tenth day after their wedding, Yamraj’s messengers came to claim the prince’s life.
Seeing her husband lifeless, the new bride cried uncontrollably. Her grief deeply moved the messengers, who returned to Yamraj and pleaded for a way to prevent such untimely deaths.
Moved by compassion, Yamraj declared:
“If a person lights a lamp outside their home on the evening of the thirteenth day of Kartik’s dark fortnight, the fear of untimely death will be removed.”
Thus, the tradition of lighting Yamadeep (lamp for Yamraj) and worshipping him on Dhanteras began.
On this day, three main deities are worshipped:
- Goddess Lakshmi – for wealth and prosperity
- Lord Dhanvantari – for health and well-being
- Lord Yamraj – for protection from untimely death
