PM Modi Congratulates Sanae Takaichi on Becoming Japan’s First Woman Prime Minister

Japan made history on Tuesday as Sanae Takaichi, a 64-year-old ultra-conservative leader from the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP), was elected as the country’s first female Prime Minister. She secured 237 votes in the lower house of parliament, defeating her rival Yoshihiko Noda, who received 149 votes. Takaichi’s victory marks a significant milestone in Japan’s political landscape, breaking a long-standing gender barrier at the highest level of leadership.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi was among the first global leaders to congratulate Takaichi. In a message posted on social media platform X, he wrote, “Heartiest congratulations to you on becoming the Prime Minister of Japan. I look forward to working with you to further strengthen the India-Japan Special Strategic and Global Partnership.” Modi also emphasized the importance of India-Japan cooperation in maintaining peace and stability in the Indo-Pacific region. UAE President Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan also sent his best wishes, expressing hope for deeper bilateral ties.

In her first address as Prime Minister, Takaichi emphasized a no-nonsense approach to leadership, stating her commitment to relentless work for Japan’s recovery. “This is the time to rebuild our country,” she said, urging citizens across generations to join hands. However, she faces steep challenges, including reviving Japan’s sluggish economy, addressing internal party corruption scandals, and navigating political alliances, including her recent partnership with Osaka Governor Hirofumi Yoshimura. Her leadership will be closely watched both at home and internationally.
