SIR Launch: Election Commission to Begin First Phase of Voter Roll Revision in Key States
: The Election Commission of India is set to begin the first phase of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of voter lists on Tuesday, following the completion of the process in Bihar. A meeting scheduled for Monday will formally announce the start of the nationwide revision drive. The initial phase will cover states such as Assam, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Kerala, and West Bengal — all of which are gearing up for assembly elections next year. Additionally, the phase may extend to major states like Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, and Chhattisgarh, where assembly polls are due in 2026.

According to senior officials, the ongoing revision aims to update, verify, and correct electoral rolls to ensure accuracy ahead of upcoming elections. The first phase of the SIR will conclude by March next year, after which the second and final phase will begin, targeting the remaining states, including hill regions. The Commission has already instructed Chief Electoral Officers to upload the most recent voter lists to their respective state portals for public review and feedback.

However, the SIR will not be conducted immediately in states where local body elections are underway or approaching, as election officials are already engaged in those processes. Once these elections conclude, those states will be included in the second phase. Bihar, which completed its SIR earlier, has already published a final list containing around 74.2 million voters. The state will go to polls in two phases on November 6 and 11, with results expected on November 14.
