Margashirsha 2025: Spiritual Significance of Lighting Lamps At Home
Margashirsha Month Begins: Know the Auspicious Places to Diya for Prosperity and Peace: The holy month of Margashirsha, also known as Agahan, begins each year after Kartik Purnima. This year, it starts on Thursday, November 6, 2025. As the ninth month of the Hindu calendar, Margashirsha holds deep spiritual significance. In the Shrimad Bhagavad Gita, Lord Shri Krishna himself declares, “Masaanam Margashirshoham” — meaning, “Among months, I am Margashirsha.” This statement highlights the divine importance of this month, making it an ideal time for devotion, charity, chanting, and lighting lamps.
Lighting lamps during this sacred month is believed to invite happiness, peace, and prosperity into one’s home. Scriptures and Vastu Shastra both recommend lighting lamps at certain auspicious places to strengthen positive energy and eliminate negativity. Here are the four most auspicious places where you should light a lamp during Margashirsha.
1. Near the Tulsi Plant
According to Hindu beliefs, Tulsi is revered as Haripriya — the beloved of Lord Vishnu. Lighting a lamp filled with pure ghee near the Tulsi plant every evening during Margashirsha is said to attract divine blessings, peace, and wealth. This sacred act pleases Lord Vishnu and helps maintain prosperity and positivity in the household.
2. At the Main Gate
Light a lamp on both sides of the main entrance of your home daily throughout this month. Doing so is believed to bring good fortune and drive away negative energies. It also helps in removing financial difficulties and opens the path to success and abundance.
3. Under the Peepal Tree
The Peepal tree is considered the dwelling place of gods, goddesses, and ancestors. Lighting a lamp beneath it during Margashirsha is believed to bring spiritual merit, remove ancestral obstacles (pitra dosh), and strengthen one’s destiny. It is also said to free devotees from past karmic burdens.
4. In the Temple
Visiting a temple, offering prayers, and lighting lamps dedicated to Lord Vishnu or Lord Krishna are especially auspicious this month. Donating lamps or ghee in temples is said to cleanse one’s sins and pave the way to attaining Vaikuntha (the divine abode of Lord Vishnu).
The month of Margashirsha is not just another period in the Hindu calendar—it is a divine opportunity to deepen spiritual practice and attract prosperity. By lighting lamps at these sacred places, devotees can fill their lives with light, peace, and divine grace.
