India Urges Russia to Release 44 Indians Serving in Its Army, Warns Citizens Against Joining

Centre Confirms 44 Indians Serving in Russian Army: India has called on Russia to immediately release 44 Indian nationals currently employed in the Russian army, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) confirmed. Speaking on the matter, MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal emphasized that Indian citizens should not accept offers of employment in the Russian military due to the serious risks involved.

The number of Indians in the Russian army has nearly doubled in recent months. In September last year, there were 27 Indians serving in various support roles such as assistants and helpers. The MEA has repeatedly raised the issue with Moscow authorities and urged that Indian nationals not be employed in military operations.

This concern was also discussed during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Russia last year. Indian officials have emphasized the danger to life and security for citizens who take up such employment, urging them to avoid any involvement with the Russian military.

The MEA continues to engage with Russian authorities to secure the immediate release of Indians serving in the army and reiterated that protecting the safety of its citizens abroad remains a top priority.
