Man Fined ₹21 Lakh for Not Wearing Helmet in Muzaffarnagar; Police Call It a Technical Error

Small Mistake, Big Fine: UP Man’s ₹21 Lakh Helmet Fine Goes Viral — Police Admit Typing Error: A shocking incident from Muzaffarnagar, Uttar Pradesh, has gone viral after a scooter owner was fined a staggering ₹21 lakh for not wearing a helmet. The photo of the massive challan spread like wildfire on social media, leaving people astonished. The fine amount was nearly 20 times the cost of the scooter itself, sparking widespread criticism and humor online.

According to reports, the incident occurred during a routine helmet-checking drive in the New Mandi area on Tuesday. Police stopped Anmol Singhal, who was riding without a helmet and also failed to produce valid vehicle documents. His scooter was seized, and a challan of ₹20.74 lakh was issued against him. Shocked by the amount, Singhal posted the challan on social media, where it quickly went viral.

Public outrage followed, prompting the authorities to investigate. The Muzaffarnagar Traffic SP, Atul Chaubey, clarified that the massive fine was due to a clerical error by the sub-inspector. The officer mistakenly entered “Section 207” without mentioning “MV Act,” causing the system to calculate an inflated penalty of ₹20.74 lakh.

Officials have since corrected the error and reduced the fine to ₹4,000, the proper penalty under the Motor Vehicles Act for riding without a helmet. The police have admitted the mistake and expressed regret, saying measures will be taken to prevent such errors in the future.
