Singer Maithili Thakur Of BJP Leads In Bihar’s Alinagar, Show Early Leads

Folk singer and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate Maithili Thakur, who is contesting her first election, is leading in the Alinagar constituency, early trends show. The poll debutant joined the BJP a month before the assembly elections to “serve Bihar”.

After exit polls predicted a big win for the National Democratic Alliance (NDA), 25-year-old Thakur said she is “mentally prepared” to serve the people of Bihar. “I don’t think for even a second whether I will win or lose because I am so happy and satisfied with my 30-day journey. I have complete faith. I feel like I will be living here and serving the people, so I am mentally prepared for that,” Thakur told NDTV’s Editor-in-Chief Rahul Kanwal.

Poll debutant Thakur sees contesting the elections as the “best decision” of her life.
“I think this was the best decision of my life. And the way I have learnt in these 30 days by living among the people, I could not have learnt this from any book or any other source, and this one month has changed my entire life,” Thakur told NDTV while sharing her experience of contesting the polls.

About Alinagar assembly seat
Alinagar is located in Darbhanga district and falls under the Darbhanga Lok Sabha constituency. It came into existence in 2008 after the Delimitation Commission’s recommendations and went to polls for the first time in 2010. The seat covers Alinagar, Tardih, Ghanshyampur blocks and Motipur panchayat.

The area is mainly rural and dominated by Brahmin, Yadav, and Muslim voters, who have a major influence on election outcomes. Although it’s just 38 km from Darbhanga and 145 km from Patna, Alinagar still faces challenges like poor infrastructure and limited public transport. The nearest railway station is Benipur, 10 km away, while towns like Madhubani, Muzaffarpur, Samastipur, and Sitamarhi lie within an 80 km range.

Electoral history: RJD’s hold and NDA’s rise
Since its formation, Alinagar has witnessed three assembly elections. RJD leader Abdul Bari Siddiqui won the first two in 2010 and 2015. But in 2020, the trend shifted when Mishri Lal Yadav of the Vikassheel Insaan Party (VIP), contesting under the NDA, defeated RJD’s Binod Mishra by 3,101 votes.

-Mishri Lal Yadav (VIP/NDA): 61,082 votes (38.62%)
-Binod Mishra (RJD): 57,981 votes (36.66%)
-Voter turnout: 57.4%
