Veteran Actress Kamini Kaushal Passes Away at 98; Remembered for Iconic Roles and Life with Dilip Kumar

Veteran Actress Kamini Kaushal Passes Away at 98: Mumbai — Hindi cinema’s legendary actress Kamini Kaushal passed away on Friday, November 14, leaving behind a rich legacy in Indian cinema. Born on January 16, 1927, in Lahore (now in Pakistan), Kamini Kaushal made her acting debut with the acclaimed 1946 film Neecha Nagar. Over the years, she became one of the most respected actresses of her era, sharing the screen with legends like Dilip Kumar and Dharmendra.

Her association with Dilip Kumar, both on and off-screen, remains a notable chapter in Bollywood history. The two first worked together in the 1948 film Shaheed, where a romance blossomed, despite Kamini being married at the time. Kamini married B.S. Sood, her brother-in-law, in 1948 after the tragic death of her sister, taking responsibility for raising her sister’s children.

Although her relationship with Dilip Kumar ended, it left a lasting impression on both. In a 2014 interview, Kamini revealed that both she and Dilip were deeply affected by their separation. She reflected on the complexities of life and relationships, saying, “We were happy together, but what could we do? My husband is a very good person. He understood why this happened. Anyone can fall in love.”

In a poignant incident in 2013, at the fourth death anniversary of actor Pran, Kamini and Dilip Kumar sat next to each other, but Dilip, then 90 years old, could not recognize her, a moment Kamini described as heartbreaking.
