Elon Musk Introduces X Chat, A New WhatsApp Competitor
Elon Musk’s ‘X Chat’ Launched, Will Compete With WhatsApp: Elon Musk has unveiled X Chat, a new messaging service within the X social media platform, positioning it as a serious competitor to established platforms like WhatsApp and Arattai. The rollout comes with a suite of advanced privacy features, including end-to-end encryption for messages, calls, and file transfers, ensuring that only the sender and recipient can access the content. Musk confirmed these updates via a post on the platform, also hinting at the imminent launch of X Money, aimed at transforming X into a comprehensive, all-in-one app.
Privacy is central to X Chat’s design. In addition to encrypting one-on-one messages, the feature now extends encryption to group conversations and media — a step up from earlier messaging models on the platform. This means no one, not even X itself, can read your private conversations. Users also gain the ability to modify or delete messages after sending them, and unlike other messaging services, there is no visible label indicating that a message was edited or removed.
To further reinforce confidentiality, X Chat introduces screenshot blocking. Users can disable screenshot capturing in chats, and if someone tries to take a screenshot, a notification will alert you. Combined with the edit-and-delete options, these measures aim to give users a high degree of control over their conversation history.
X Chat is designed to be ad-free, with no tracking of user data. All past and new direct messages will exist in a unified space, making communication more seamless. Voice memo support is expected to be added soon. Currently, X Chat is available on iOS and in the web version of X under the DMs section, with an Android launch slated for the near future.
