Cyclone Fear Looms Over Odisha Coast as Low-Pressure Intensifies; Farmers Rush to Save Ripening Paddy
Low-Pressure in Bay of Bengal May Turn Cyclonic: IMD Issues Heavy Rain Warnings: The country is witnessing significant weather fluctuations, with South India experiencing continuous rainfall while severe cold grips several northern, central, eastern, and northeastern states. Meanwhile, weather activity in the Bay of Bengal has intensified, raising concerns of a potential cyclonic storm.
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), a low-pressure area has formed over the Bay of Bengal and is expected to intensify rapidly. The system originated over the Malacca Strait and adjoining South Andaman Sea on November 23. Meteorologists forecast that it will strengthen into a depression within 24 hours and is likely to develop into a cyclonic storm over the southeast Bay of Bengal within the next 48 hours. As a result, several parts of South India may experience heavy to very heavy rainfall over the coming days.
Heavy Rainfall Alert for Southern States
The IMD has issued warnings for widespread heavy rainfall in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands from November 23 to 28. Tamil Nadu, Kerala, and Mahe are likely to receive heavy showers from November 23 to 25, with very heavy rainfall expected on November 23 and 24. Lakshadweep, coastal Andhra Pradesh, and Yanam are likely to see increased rainfall activity on November 23 and 24. Rayalaseema may also experience heavy rains on November 23.
In Tamil Nadu, extremely heavy rainfall exceeding 21 cm is expected in isolated places, while several regions may receive heavy to very heavy rainfall ranging from 7 to 20 cm.
Cold Wave Tightens Grip in the North
As heavy rains lash the south, the northern and central states continue to face intense cold. The IMD reports that no major change in minimum temperatures is expected this week across western India. However, parts of Maharashtra may see a drop in minimum temperatures by 2 to 3 degrees Celsius over the next four days. For the rest of the country, temperatures are likely to remain steady.
Dense fog is likely to persist in the northern regions of western Uttar Pradesh during the morning and night of November 23 and 24, affecting visibility and potentially disrupting transportation.
With the dual impact of heavy rains in the south and bone-chilling cold in the north, the country remains on high alert as the weather continues to shift dramatically.
