Poisonous arame in roasted chickpeas
Roasted chickpeas are turning poisonous. Rajya Sabha MP Priyanka Chaturvedi has raised the issue of increased levels of colouring in many food products including roasted chickpeas . In this regard, she has written a letter to Union Health Minister JP Nadda and Food Processing Minister Chirag Paswan, demanding immediate action on this serious threat.
Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Priyanka Chaturvedi wrote in her letter, “Recently, some evidence has come to light that illegal coloring is being added to roasted gram flour. It is an industrial dye like arame. This dye is supposed to be used only in industries like textiles and leather. But it is being used illegally in food items like roasted gram flour,” she said. “This is not only a violation of food safety rules but also a threat to the health, safety and trust of millions of Indian citizens.”
Priyanka Chaturvedi has raised serious questions over the supervision of food safety regulator FSSAI. She said that the incident shows the failure of FSSAI’s regulatory supervision. Citing the deaths due to spoiled cough syrup, the MP urged the Union government to prioritize public health. She demanded an immediate investigation into the incident and strict action against those responsible. It should be noted that the aramin mentioned by Priyanka Chaturvedi in her letter is a dye, which is used in the textile and leather industry. It is harmful to the common man.
