Cyclone Ditwah to Hit Tamil Nadu–Andhra–Puducherry Coast by Nov 30 as IMD Issues Heavy Rain Alerts
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Thursday warned that another cyclonic storm, Ditwah, is likely to impact the Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, and Puducherry coasts by November 30, just days after Cyclone Senyar moved away from the region. The weather system that intensified into Cyclone Senyar in the Malacca Strait has now drifted toward Malaysia and Sumatra, while a fresh low-pressure area over the southwest Bay of Bengal has strengthened into a new cyclonic storm.
IMD Issues Yellow and Orange Alerts
A deep depression currently lies over the southwest Bay of Bengal and the Sri Lankan coast, triggering heavy rainfall activity across southern India. According to the IMD, Tamil Nadu is likely to receive heavy to very heavy rainfall from November 27 to 30, with isolated extremely heavy showers possible on November 28 and 29.
Similarly, coastal Andhra Pradesh, Yanam, and Rayalaseema are expected to experience heavy to very heavy rainfall from November 28 to December 1, with the possibility of extremely heavy rainfall on November 30.
The IMD has issued yellow and orange alerts for several Tamil Nadu districts including Chennai, Nagapattinam, Tiruvallur, and Thanjavur for November 27–29, warning residents of potential severe weather and urging precautionary measures.
Weather Outlook Across India
While southern states brace for cyclonic impact, the IMD reports no significant change in minimum temperatures in Northeast India for the next five days. Following this period, dense fog and cold wave conditions may develop.
Dense fog is likely in Himachal Pradesh, Haryana, Chandigarh, and parts of Delhi from November 28–30.
Cold conditions are expected to intensify in eastern Rajasthan between November 30 and December 1, while cold wave conditions may appear in parts of Punjab (Nov 28–29) and Rajasthan (Dec 3–4).
Cyclone Ditwah Path and Strength
According to the IMD’s latest update, Cyclone Ditwah is currently positioned over the southwest Bay of Bengal, near Pottuvil, about 700 km southeast of Chennai. The storm is expected to move north-northwestward, reaching the north Tamil Nadu–Puducherry–south Andhra Pradesh stretch by the early hours of November 30.
The name Ditwah was submitted by Yemen, as per the official list of North Indian Ocean cyclone names.
Cyclone Senyar Moves Away
Cyclone Senyar—described as a rare event because it is the first cyclonic storm ever recorded in the Strait of Malacca—has now moved away from India. The system is traveling west-southwest at 9 kmph with maximum sustained winds of 83 kmph, heading toward Malaysia and Sumatra.
As Cyclone Ditwah approaches, authorities remain on alert, and residents in vulnerable coastal areas are advised to stay updated with the latest advisories from the IMD and local disaster management teams.
