“I’m in a Government Job”: Kamal Haasan Reflects on Proud Moment at 70

Kamal Haasan Fulfils Mother’s Dream at 70 After Becoming Rajya Sabha MP: South Indian cinema icon Kamal Haasan has shared an emotional milestone from his life, revealing that he has finally fulfilled his late mother’s long-cherished dream—securing a government job—at the age of 70. The actor and politician opened up about this personal achievement during his appearance at the Hortus Art and Literature Festival in Kerala, where he engaged in a discussion with actor Manju Warrier on cinema, society and politics.

Reflecting on his recent induction into the Rajya Sabha, Kamal said the moment instantly brought memories of his parents, D. Srinivasan Iyengar and Rajalakshmi. He recalled how his mother often reminded him that even passing the SSLC exam could have secured him a stable government job in the Railways, a possibility that never materialised during his youth due to his early departure from formal schooling.

“When I went in and signed the contract, the first people who came to my mind were my father and mother,” he said. “At 70, when they gave me my daily expenses, I suddenly felt like calling my mother to tell her, ‘I’m in a government job now.’ I felt so proud.”

Kamal expressed that serving the people through public office had long been a personal aspiration, one he is glad to finally pursue. He also reiterated his political positioning as a centrist and noted that his production company, Raaj Kamal Films International, often backs projects aligned with his ideological values.

On the professional front, Kamal was last seen in Mani Ratnam’s Thug Life, which drew a mixed response from audiences. He is now gearing up for an upcoming project directed by Ambareev and is also set to produce a film starring Rajinikanth. The Rajinikanth project, previously linked to director Sundar C., awaits the announcement of a new director.
