Bangladesh Sets February 12, 2026 for Historic National Election and Constitutional Referendum

Bangladesh Sets Election Day; Nation to Elect New Government on February 12: Bangladesh is preparing for a major political transition as the Election Commission announced that the 13th National Parliamentary Election will be held on February 12, 2026. Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) AMM Nasiruddin confirmed the schedule on Thursday, marking what could become the beginning of a new government in the country.

This election carries particular significance as it will be the first general election since the departure of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina amid large-scale student protests in August 2024. Political analysts believe this vote will shape the future of Bangladesh’s democratic landscape.

Speaking at the press conference, CEC Nasiruddin emphasized the Commission’s commitment to transparency and stability.
“We will show the world that Bangladesh can hold free and peaceful elections in a democratic manner. Fake news and rumours are the biggest challenges; people should stay away from them,” he said.

Alongside the parliamentary election, voters will also participate in a historic national referendum. On the same day, Bangladeshis will vote on the National Charter Constitutional Reform Order of July 7, 2025, a sweeping reform proposal aimed at restructuring key aspects of the country’s constitutional framework. The referendum is expected to provide the public with a direct say in shaping long-term governance reforms.
