Union Budget 2026: Will February 1 Sunday Shift the Budget Date: As the nation eagerly awaits the Union Budget for the financial year 2026–27, uncertainty has emerged over the date of its presentation due to February 1 falling on a Sunday. Traditionally, government offices remain closed on Sundays, raising questions about whether Parliament will convene on a holiday to present the country’s most important financial document.
According to sources in government circles, Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman is likely to present the Union Budget on February 1, even if it is a Sunday. However, officials clarified that a final decision is yet to be taken.
To resolve the suspense, a key meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Parliamentary Affairs (CCPA) is scheduled for Wednesday. The committee will finalize the dates for the Budget Session of Parliament, including the day on which the budget will be presented. If approved, this would be among the rare instances in India’s parliamentary history when the Union Budget is presented on a holiday. Past governments have, on occasion, convened Parliament on Sundays under special circumstances.
Meanwhile, reports suggest that the Budget Session may commence on January 28. The session is expected to begin with President Droupadi Murmu’s address to a joint sitting of both Houses of Parliament. On January 29, the government is likely to table the Economic Survey, which provides an overview of the country’s economic performance and outlook.
January 30 and 31 are expected to be holidays. If the government proceeds with the February 1 schedule, the Union Budget would be presented on a Sunday, making it a notable event for both Parliament and the public.
For citizens, a Sunday budget could be a welcome development, allowing people to watch the Finance Minister’s full speech from home and better understand how the government’s fiscal decisions may affect their finances.
All eyes are now on the CCPA meeting, which will determine whether Budget Day 2026 becomes a rare Sunday affair in India’s parliamentary calendar.
