Actor-turned-politician Vijay has created a controversy by praising Prabhakaran, the mastermind of the assassination of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi. He has stressed on raising the voice of Sri Lankan Tamils living in the country. Praising Prabhakaran, he said that Ilam was like a mother to Tamils. It is worth noting that the issue of Sri Lankan Tamils is emotionally important in Tamil Nadu. During Vijay’s speech, people present stood with Prabhakaran’s photo.
Addressing the public meeting, Vijay said, ‘ Ilam Tamils are our navel-bound relatives … It doesn’t matter if they live in Sri Lanka or anywhere else in the world. They are in deep pain after losing a leader who gave them motherly love. It is our duty to raise their voice today. ‘ It is noteworthy that the issue of Sri Lankan Tamils is emotionally important in Tamil Nadu. However , this is not the first time that Vijay has shown support for Sri Lankan Tamils before. He sat on a hunger strike in 2008 against the killing of Tamil community members in Sri Lanka.
It is worth mentioning that Prabhakaran, who fought for an independent Tamil state in Sri Lanka, and his spy chief Pottu Amman plotted to assassinate former Indian Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi in 1991. The LTTE wanted to take revenge by opposing the sending of peacekeeping forces by India. It is worth noting that Rajiv Gandhi was assassinated when he was on his way to attend a rally in Chennai. A Tamil woman carried out a suicide bombing. Subsequently, the Indian government banned the LTTE and declared Prabhakaran a criminal. However, the LTTE has not officially admitted the murder of Rajiv Gandhi.
