AFSPA Extended for Six Months in Manipur, Nagaland, and Arunachal Pradesh; 13 Police Stations in Manipur Exempted

AFSPA Extended For Six Months In Manipur, Nagaland, And Arunachal Pradesh: The Union Home Ministry on Friday extended the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act (AFSPA) for another six months in several parts of Manipur, Nagaland, and Arunachal Pradesh, declaring them as “disturbed areas.” The extension will come into effect from October 1, 2025, and remain valid until the end of March 2026.

In view of the ongoing unrest and volatile law and order situation, AFSPA has been extended across Manipur, with the exception of areas under 13 police stations in five districts, including Imphal West, Imphal East, Bishnupur, Thoubal, and Kakching. These areas remain exempted due to relatively stable conditions.

In Nagaland, the Act has been extended in nine districts and 21 police station areas across five other districts, while in Arunachal Pradesh, it will be enforced in Tirap, Changlang, Longding, and parts of Namsai district, bordering Assam.

The decision comes amid continuing ethnic violence and tensions in Manipur, where over 260 lives have been lost since May 2023. The state has been under President’s Rule since February 13, 2025, following the resignation of Chief Minister N. Biren Singh.

AFSPA, enacted in 1958, has long been criticized for granting sweeping powers to the armed forces, including arrest, search, and use of force, often with impunity. Human rights groups have repeatedly called for its repeal, citing abuses and lack of accountability in “disturbed areas.”

The Home Ministry stated that the latest extension was based on a comprehensive review of the security and law and order situation across the affected northeastern states.
