Amazon Leo to Rival Elon Musk’s Starlink, Promises Internet Access in Remote Suburbs
Amazon Leo Launches to Compete with Starlink, Expanding Access Beyond Cities: Amazon has officially renamed its ambitious Project Kuiper satellite initiative to “Amazon Leo,” signaling a more aggressive push into the global satellite internet market dominated by Elon Musk’s Starlink. With thousands of satellites already deployed in low-Earth orbit (LEO), Amazon aims to deliver fast, reliable internet to remote and underserved regions where traditional broadband networks are costly or impossible to install.
Satellite internet plays a crucial role in areas with difficult terrain such as mountains, forests, and river basins. In these locations, laying fiber cables is expensive and impractical. Amazon Leo seeks to eliminate these barriers by providing direct connectivity from orbit, ensuring that rural communities and isolated regions gain access to modern digital services. The competition with Starlink is expected to intensify as both companies expand their global coverage.
Amazon’s satellite network was originally known as Project Kuiper, a name inspired by the Kuiper Belt beyond Neptune. Today, the company’s satellites operate in a belt-like formation between 590 and 630 kilometers above Earth. To support this mission, Amazon has established a high-capacity satellite production facility in Kirkland, Washington, capable of manufacturing up to five satellites daily. Additionally, the company has booked more than 80 rocket launches with partners including Blue Origin, SpaceX, and United Launch Alliance — the largest commercial launch deal in history.
Amazon Leo’s system consists of three core components: a vast LEO satellite constellation, ground-based gateway infrastructure, and customer terminals offering speeds from 100 Mbps to 1 Gbps. Enterprise services are expected to roll out by late 2025, with widespread global availability planned for 2026. As Amazon ramps up deployment, the global satellite internet landscape is poised for a major transformation.
