Bangladesh Introduces New Banknotes, Drops Founding Father Mujibur Rahman’s Portrait
Bangladesh Introduces New Banknotes: The interim government of Bangladesh has issued new currency notes. The picture of the country’s founder, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, has been removed from the Bangladesh note. According to reports, new currency notes have been issued on Sunday, June 1, 2025, in three classes, i.e., 1,000 Taka, 50 Taka and 20 Taka. However, the old notes and coins with the picture of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman will remain in circulation for now.
There is no picture of any human figure on the new currency
This is the first time that Mujibur Rahman’s picture is not on the new currency notes. Some media reports have quoted a senior Bangladesh official as saying that the new currency series no longer has any human figure picture. The country’s cultural heritage has been highlighted by depicting natural landscapes and historical sites on Bangladesh’s new currency notes.
Photos of Hindu and Buddhist Temples:
The banknotes will feature images of Hindu and Buddhist temples, artwork of the late Zainul Abedin and the National Martyrs’ Memorial, which pays tribute to those killed during the 1971 Liberation War, reports AFP.
Mujibur Rahman is known as Bangabandhu:
Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, also popularly known as ‘Bangabandhu’, was the father of former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. A few months ago, protesters in Bangladesh vandalised Rahman’s house and set it on fire last night. Violent protesters also demolished the houses of Sheikh Hasina’s Awami League leaders and damaged the murals of Mujibur Rahman.
Sheikh Hasina is living in India
Hasina, 77, has been in India since August 5 last year, when she escaped Bangladesh after huge student-led demonstrations overthrew her 16-month-old Awami League administration.
Mujibur Rahman was killed in August 1975
The father of Sheikh Hasina, Mujibur Rahman, is regarded as an independence hero in Bengal. However, essentially, his legacy is tarnished due to the resentment people bear toward his daughter. He was killed, along with most of his relations, in a coup led by a handful of army officers on August 15, 1975. On the other hand, his daughter, Sheikh Hasina, was away in Germany.
