Accident at Bardhaman Railway Station Injures 8; Railways Assures Free Treatment and Compensation

A major accident occurred at Bardhaman Railway Station on Sunday evening, injuring eight passengers after a woman lost her balance and fell on the stairs of a foot overbridge (FOB), causing a chain reaction among people seated there.

The incident took place around 5:30 p.m. on the stairs connecting platforms 4 and 5. According to railway officials, the woman was descending the stairs when she slipped, falling onto others sitting on the steps. Her fall triggered a domino effect, causing multiple passengers to lose balance and fall.

Among the injured are five women and three men. All were immediately rushed to Bardhaman Medical College for treatment. The Railway Protection Force (RPF) and other railway staff responded swiftly to the scene.

Contrary to early speculation, the Indian Railways has clarified that there was no stampede, and the crowd at the time was normal. A statement issued by the Railways said:
“On Sunday evening, a woman travelling on the foot overbridge at Bardhaman station lost her balance and fell on the stairs. Her fall caused others sitting on the stairs to lose balance and fall as well. The situation was under control and was not a stampede.”

Divisional Railway Manager (DRM) of Howrah, Vishal Kapoor, confirmed that all eight injured passengers are out of danger.
“The railway is providing all possible assistance to the injured. They will receive free treatment and compensation. If treatment at a bigger hospital becomes necessary, the railway will ensure it is arranged without delay,” Kapoor said.

Railway authorities have urged passengers to avoid sitting on the stairs of foot overbridges to prevent such mishaps in the future. An internal inquiry has been initiated to assess safety measures and crowd management protocols at the station.
