Bharat Bandh On 9 July 2025: what will be open and what’s affected?
Bharat Bandh On 9 July 2025: Who’s Striking” 10 central trade unions and their allies have called for a ‘Bharat Bandh’ on July 9. More than 25 crore employees are involved in this. They say that they will protest against the anti-labor, anti-farmer, and pro-corporate policies of the government. This is likely to affect banking, insurance, postal, coal mining, road transport, construction, and transportation in many states. This may also cause trouble to the common man. Let us know about this ‘Bharat Bandh’ in detail.
Who all will be participating in the general strike?
AITUC (All India Trade Union Congress), HMS, CITU, INTUC, INUTUC, TUCC, AICCTU, LPF, and UTUC will participate in the ‘Bharat Bandh’. The United Kisan Morcha and the United Front of Agricultural Labour Unions have also supported the strike. Therefore, the impact of this bandh is likely to be seen in rural areas as well. However, the RSS-affiliated organization Bharatiya Mazdoor Sangh will not participate in the bandh.
What will remain open and closed?
Schools, colleges and private offices are expected to remain open as usual but disruptions in transport, banking and postal services may affect normal life.
Farmers and laborers from the country will be included
All India Trade Union Congress leader Amarjit Kaur said, more than 25 crore employees are expected to join this strike. Farmers and workers from all over the country will join this strike. Also, Hind Mazdoor Sabha leader Harbhajan Singh Sidhu said, banking, postal services, coal mines, factories, and inter-state transport services are likely to be affected by this strike.
Why have the employees gone on strike?
The unions calling for the strike say that we had submitted a charter of 17 demands to Labor Minister Mansukh Mandaviya, but it has not been considered yet. The government has not been organizing the annual labor conference for the last 10 years, and through the new labor code, efforts are being made to weaken labor unions, increase working hours, and reduce the rights of workers, due to which this strike has been called.
Meanwhile, the trade unions had earlier called for similar nationwide strikes on November 26, 2020, March 28-29, 2022, and February 16, 2024. A similar strike has also been called for 2025.
What are the demands of the workers?
- The four new labor codes should be repealed, which the unions have described as a violation of workers’ rights.
- The old pension scheme should be restored.
- The minimum wage should be ₹26,000 per month.
- The contract system should end.
- The privatisation of government departments, such as railways, electricity, public transport, and insurance, should be banned.
- Unemployment allowance should be started
Trade unions also allege that the government gave relief of Rs 17 lakh crore to corporate houses, but the problems of workers and farmers are being continuously ignored. At present, there has been no official announcement regarding keeping schools and colleges closed regarding this strike, but the local administration can make a decision depending on the situation.
