Gaya’s name was changed to ‘Gaya ji’

 Bihar Govt Renames Gaya Town As Gaya Ji: The famous city of Gaya in Bihar for the Pindaan of Peter will now be known as ‘Gayaji’. The Nitish Kumar government has decided to rename Gaya city as Gayaji, keeping in mind its mythological, historical, and religious importance. The Cabinet meeting held under the chairmanship of Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on Friday approved this proposal. A total of 69 proposals have been approved in this meeting.

Now the Gaya city will be known by this name:

The government has said that Gaya is a centre of mythological, historical and religious importance behind changing the name of this city. Therefore, this city will be known as “Gaya ji” instead of “Gaya”. Let us tell you that this city is one of the most beautiful cities of Bihar. This city is also very famous for its mythology. Along with this, this city is also a major centre of faith of the world’s two major religions, Hinduism and Buddhism.

The city is named after Gayasur:

It is told in mythological texts that Gayasur was a powerful demon who did penance to Lord Vishnu and received a boon from him that his body would destroy all sins. When Gayasur started misusing this power, Lord Vishnu decided to kill him. To prevent Gayasur’s body from falling on the earth, Lord Vishnu pressed it with his feet and buried it in the netherworld. After being pressed down by Lord Vishnu through Gayasur’s body, this place was transformed into the city of Gaya. This city holds a very important pilgrimage point in Hinduism, where Pind Daan and Shraadh for ancestors are performed. The story goes that the Pind and Shrraadh on Gayasur’s corpse freed the ancestors, granting them peace.

Mahatma Buddha attained enlightenment in the city of Gaya:

The Buddhist texts say that Mahatma Buddha attained his enlightenment at Bodh Gaya, which currently lies within Gaya. The scriptures say that Mahatma Buddha did austere penance for a long time while sitting under a peepal tree in Bodh Gaya and was finally enlightened. This tree is now called the Bodhi tree and is holy ground for Buddhist followers.
