CBSE mandates 75% attendance for exam: rule for 2025–26 board exams

CBSE Big Decision: 75 Percent Attendance Mandatory To Appear For Exams: An important update has come out for class 10th and 12th students. The Central Board of Secondary Education has made 75% attendance mandatory for board examinees for the academic session 2025-26. This instruction has been issued on 4 August 2025, and it is an extension of the old circular issued on 9 October 2024. The purpose of this rule is to bring regularity to the studies of the students and maintain the seriousness of the examination. This time, CBSE has also issued a detailed SOP (Standard Operating Procedure) for schools so that cases of low attendance can be handled properly. See details here.

CBSE Important Notice 2025: Important guidelines for schools

  • Making students and parents aware: At the beginning of the session, schools must ensure that students and their parents are aware of the attendance rules and their implications.
  • Following the correct procedure for leave: Application for leave taken due to medical or emergency reasons must be in writing and supported with necessary documents. Unofficial absence will be considered serious.
  • Maintenance of Attendance Records: Schools must maintain a daily attendance register signed by the class teacher and the principal, which can be viewed by CBSE for inspection at any time.
  • Communication with parents: If a student’s attendance is not regular, it is mandatory to inform the parents via registered post or email.
  • Surprise inspection and action: CBSE can inspect schools at any time. If any discrepancy is found in the records, the student’s examination can be cancelled, and the school’s recognition can also be cancelled.

CBSE Important Notice 2025: What Happens in Case of Low Attendance?

According to CBSE’s SOP, if the student’s attendance is less than 75 percent, exemption will be given only under certain circumstances. This includes prolonged illness, death of a family member, participation in sports competitions or any serious family emergency. For this, medical certificate, death certificate or related documents will be mandatory. All cases should be sent to the concerned regional office by January 7, 2026.
