Home Minister Amit Shah has announced that the census of India’s population will be conducted during the year 2027. The Home Ministry on Monday issued a notification related to the census and caste census under the Census Act, 1948. Although the census is conducted in India every 10 years, the census was being postponed due to the COVID-19 epidemic, but now, after the notification has been issued, it has become clear that the census work will start soon. The next census will be conducted in 2035.
This time the census process will be done in two phases, the first phase of which will be completed by October 1, 2026, while the second and final phase will be completed by March 1, 2027 and March 1, 2027 will be considered as the reference date, that is, whatever will be the data of the population and social status of the country at that time, the same will be recorded and then these figures will be made public, which you will also be able to know.
In hilly states like Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh, and Uttarakhand, the census process will be completed before other states by October 2026. The reason for this is the weather and cold here; October 1, 2026, will be considered as the reference date for these states. The entire census process will be completed by March 1, 2027; that is, the entire process will be completed in about 21 months. After this, the primary data of the census will be released in March 2027, while it will take till December 2027 for the detailed data to be released.

After this, the systematic delimitation of Lok Sabha and Assembly seats will begin by 2028, during which 33 percent reservation for women can also be implemented. That is, the picture of reservation for women can become clear before the 2029 Lok Sabha elections. Now you must be wondering how the census is conducted, so before the census, a proforma is prepared, which contains questionnaires for the housing census and population census.
Questions related to caste and religion can also be included in this census. Around 34 lakh employees will participate in this census, who will be trained. New columns and menus for caste, sub-caste, and OBC will be included in the software for digital calculation.
During the process of the housing census, a list of houses is prepared, and information related to housing conditions, amenities, and assets is collected. In this process, supervisors go door-to-door and ask questions. This time, 30 questions can be asked in the census, which will include name, age, gender, date of birth, marital status, education, employment, religion, caste and sub-sect, relationship with the head of the family, residential status, and migration-related questions.
