Nitish Kumar announces ‘free electricity’ for Bihar consumers ahead of assembly poll

Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar is also trying his best to save the 20-year-old legacy. And for this, he has made new announcements for the people. After announcing to provide one crore jobs, he has now announced to provide free electricity. The Chief Minister himself has given information in this regard on the X handle.

He said that we are providing electricity to everyone at affordable rates. Now we are trying to provide electricity to all domestic consumers in the state at affordable rates from 1st August 2025 i.e. from July. Not even a single rupee will be spent for this. In this, a total of 1 crore 67 lakh families in the state will benefit.

The Chief Minister said that in the next three years, all these domestic consumers will be benefited by installing solar power plants on the roofs of their houses or near their houses with their consent. Nitish has announced free electricity for the Bihar Assembly elections. He announced that all the households in the state will get 125 units of free electricity from August 1, he said through an X.
It is worth noting that there are many days left for the assembly elections in Bihar. But before that, different political parties are adopting different strategies to attract people. Before that, the Nitish government has announced to provide employment to 1 crore people. Along with this, it has announced to provide 35% reservation for women. Now it has announced to provide free electricity.
“For extremely poor families covered under the Kutir Jyoti Yojana, the full cost of installing solar systems will be borne by the state government. For others, the government will provide suitable support. This means domestic consumers will no longer have to pay for up to 125 units of electricity, and at the same time, the state is expected to generate around 10,000 megawatts of solar power in the next three years,” Kumar said in his X post.
Free Electricity – A smart move?
Bihar is set to hold Assembly elections at the end of 2025, and this announcement could severely impact the results. In Bihar, electricity bills are a major expense for many families. The promise of 125 units of free electricity could be a big relief for people living in both villages and cities. The scheme is expected to help mainly poor and middle-class households, which may increase support for the Nitish-led government.
