Coldrif Cough Syrup Tragedy: Tamil Nadu Shuts Down Pharma Company After 22 Child Deaths

Coldrif Cough Syrup Tragedy: Manufacturing Firm’s License Cancelled In Tamil Nadu: In a major crackdown following the deaths of 22 children in Madhya Pradesh linked to Coldrif Cough Syrup, the Tamil Nadu government has revoked the manufacturing license of Srisan Pharmaceutical Company, the manufacturer of the contaminated syrup. The state’s Drugs Control Department confirmed that the company has been officially shut down after an investigation revealed excessive levels of diethylene glycol (DEG), a toxic chemical, in the medicine.

The fallout has led to the arrest of company owner Ranganathan, who was taken into custody by the Madhya Pradesh Special Investigation Team (SIT) on October 9. He has been remanded to 10 days of police custody. In addition, two senior drug inspectors have been suspended, and the Tamil Nadu government has ordered a broader probe into all pharmaceutical companies operating in the state.

Political reactions have intensified, with BJP leader K. Annamalai criticizing the DMK-led Tamil Nadu government for regulatory lapses. The incident has drawn nationwide attention, especially as Coldrif syrup had already been banned in multiple states. With 22 confirmed child fatalities in Madhya Pradesh and growing public outrage, authorities are under pressure to ensure accountability and overhaul drug safety protocols.
