Cyclone Montha Nears Andhra Coast: 65 Trains, Flights Cancelled as NDRF Teams Begin Evacuations
Cyclone Montha Impacts Andhra Pradesh; 65 Trains Canceled, Flights Disrupted: The threat of Cyclone Montha has triggered high alert across coastal Andhra Pradesh, with the storm expected to make landfall near Kakinada by the evening of October 28. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the cyclone is likely to intensify into a severe cyclonic storm with wind speeds reaching up to 110 kmph. The administration has issued an orange alert for several coastal districts, warning of heavy rainfall and potential flooding.
In anticipation of the cyclone, transport services have been severely disrupted. The East Coast Railway has cancelled over 65 train services between Andhra Pradesh and Odisha for October 28 and 29, affecting key routes through Vijayawada, Rajahmundry, Kakinada, and Visakhapatnam. All IndiGo and Air India Express flights scheduled to operate from Visakhapatnam Airport on October 28 have also been cancelled due to adverse weather conditions. Officials have stated that train and flight operations will resume only after safety checks and once weather conditions improve.
Meanwhile, the Andhra Pradesh government has initiated large-scale evacuation drives in vulnerable coastal areas, including East and West Godavari, Konaseema, and Visakhapatnam. Teams from the National and State Disaster Response Forces (NDRF and SDRF) have been deployed for rescue and relief efforts. Citizens have been urged to stay indoors, avoid venturing into the sea, and follow official safety advisories. BJP President J.P. Nadda has also called on party units to assist local authorities in preparedness and rehabilitation measures as the region braces for the cyclone’s impact.
