Cyclone ‘Montha’ is gathering strength. It is slowly moving towards the land. The low pressure formed in the Bay of Bengal has turned into a depression and will take the form of a deep depression today (Sunday). It will turn into a deep depression by this evening. It will take the form of a cyclone tomorrow (Monday) i.e. on the morning of the 27th. It will touch the Andhra Pradesh coast from the evening to the night of the 28th. It will cross the land near Kakinada between Machilipatnam and Kalingapatnam in Andhra Pradesh. At this time, the wind speed will be 90 to 100 km. The IMD has issued a warning to Andhra Pradesh, Odisha and Tamil Nadu in view of the cyclonic storm forming in the Bay of Bengal. It is approaching the east coast of India and is likely to bring heavy rainfall in coastal areas from next week. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), coastal Andhra Pradesh and parts of Rayalaseema region will have to brace for heavy to very heavy rainfall from October 27 onwards as cyclonic storm “Montha” (named by Thailand) is likely to cross the state coast between Machilipatnam and Kalingapatnam near Kakinada on October 28. The state’s disaster management teams have been put on high alert.

On the other hand, the Indian Meteorological Department has estimated that heavy to very heavy rainfall will occur in Odisha due to its impact. Even if it touches land in Andhra Pradesh, it will have a wide impact in Odisha. There will be heavy rainfall in Odisha. More than half of the districts of Odisha will be affected by the possible cyclone. According to the Meteorological Department’s estimates, heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely to occur in the state for four days from 27 to 30. While it will have a major impact in South Odisha, moderate rainfall will be seen in North Odisha. For this, a red warning has been issued for Malkangiri, Koraput, Rayagada, Gajapati and Ganjam.

An orange warning has been issued for Malkangiri, Koraput, Nabarangpur, Kalahandi, Rayagada, Gajapati and Ganjam districts for the 27th. Similarly, heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely to occur in Malkangiri, Koraput, Rayagada, Gajapati and Ganjam on the 28th. The Meteorological Department has also predicted heavy rainfall in Nabarangpur, Kalahandi, Kandhamal, Nayagarh, Khordha and Puri districts. In addition, wind speed is likely to be high in Malkangiri, Koraput, Rayagada, Gajapati and Ganjam districts. In view of this, a red warning has been issued for Malkangiri, Koraput, Nabarangpur, Kalahandi and Rayagada for October 29.
Although it is said that there is no threat of cyclone in Odisha, it is still possible to experience heavy rain. The government has now sounded the alarm regarding the Meteorological Department’s assessment. Disaster Management Minister Suresh Pujari has held discussions with the District Magistrates of the affected districts, including the SRC. He has directed to keep relief materials and cyclone shelters ready. He has asked to monitor the landslide-affected areas. In addition, the leave of government employees in various districts has been cancelled. Those who have gone on leave have been instructed to join work immediately.
