India-China Direct Flights to Resume from October 2025 as Diplomatic Ties Improve

Direct Flight Service Between India And China To Begin After 5 Years : After a prolonged suspension, direct flights between India and China are set to resume this month, marking a significant step towards normalizing bilateral relations between the two Asian giants. The renewed air service is expected to begin by the end of October 2025, with IndiGo Airlines announcing the launch of direct flights to China starting from October 26.

This development comes as talks to revise the air service agreement between the two nations entered their sixth phase, indicating steady progress in diplomatic and commercial negotiations. According to a statement issued by India’s Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), both countries have agreed to initiate direct flights between selected destinations, provided the chosen airlines meet the mutually agreed commercial criteria.

The revival of air connectivity follows a high-level meeting between Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping, held last month in Tianjin on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit. The leaders emphasized a pragmatic approach to regional cooperation and improving bilateral ties.

A key outcome of their discussions was an agreement on new patrolling rules along the 3,500-km-long Line of Actual Control (LAC), which has seen heightened tensions over the past four years. The move is seen as a significant confidence-building measure that could ease long-standing border disputes.

The MEA noted that both leaders appreciated the progress made in implementing last year’s peace agreement and reiterated their commitment to maintaining peace and stability along the border. They also expressed the intention to work toward a mutually agreed and just solution to the border issue, with a focus on the long-term interests of their citizens.

Experts believe that the resumption of direct flights could serve as both a symbolic and practical step toward rebuilding trust, enhancing people-to-people contact, and boosting trade and tourism between the two countries.
