Record-Breaking Diwali Sales Highlight India’s Shift to Indigenous Goods; Chinese Trade Sluggish

This Diwali season witnessed a historic shift in consumer sentiment as Indian markets embraced indigenous goods, sidelining Chinese imports. According to a report released by the Confederation of All India Traders (CAIT), the festival saw record-breaking trade, with total transactions worth ₹6.05 lakh crore. This includes ₹5.40 lakh crore in goods and ₹65,000 crore in services — the highest festive turnover in Indian commercial history.

CAIT’s comprehensive report is based on a nationwide survey across 60 key distribution hubs, including metros, state capitals, and tier 2 and 3 cities. The data reflects a major boost for the ‘Vocal for Local’ campaign, with 87% of customers reportedly purchasing Indian-made products. The demand for Chinese goods dropped significantly, while the sale of Indian products rose by 25% compared to last year — signaling a strong shift in market preferences.

CAIT Secretary General and Chandni Chowk MP Praveen Khandelwal credited the Modi government’s policies for the success. He called Prime Minister Narendra Modi a “strong brand ambassador” for promoting indigenous trade and rationalizing GST, which has fostered confidence among both traders and consumers. The slogans ‘Vocal for Local’ and ‘Swadeshi Diwali’ have resonated widely, transforming consumer behavior and strengthening India’s economic self-reliance.
