5.1-Magnitude Earthquake Jolts Assam, Tremors Felt Across Northeast India
Early Morning Earthquake Hits Assam, No Casualties Reported: A strong earthquake struck Assam early Monday morning, January 5, 2026, triggering panic among residents across the northeastern region. According to the National Centre for Seismology (NCS), the earthquake measured 5.1 on the Richter scale, with its epicentre located in Morigaon district of Assam.
The tremors were felt at around 4:17 am, when most people were asleep. Sudden shaking forced many residents to rush out of their homes in fear. Apart from Assam, tremors were also reported from Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh, and several other parts of northeast India.
Epicentre 50 Km Below Ground
Officials said the earthquake originated at a depth of approximately 50 kilometres below the ground, which caused its impact to be felt over a wide area. While some regions experienced mild tremors, others reported strong shaking lasting a few seconds.
No Casualties or Major Damage Reported
As of now, no injuries or major damage have been reported. The Department of Administration and Disaster Management is closely monitoring the situation, and information is being continuously gathered from sensitive and vulnerable areas to ensure preparedness in case of aftershocks.
Authorities Urge Caution
Local authorities have appealed to people to remain calm, stay alert, and not fall for rumours. Disaster management teams are on standby, and emergency protocols are in place.
Experts have once again emphasized that residents living in earthquake-prone zones should always follow safety guidelines and be prepared for such natural events.
