Election Commission Introduces Color Photos and Clearer Fonts on EVM Ballot Papers for Better Voter Clarity
ECI’s New Guideline: Coloured Photos Of Candidates On EVM Ballot Papers: In a major electoral reform, the Election Commission of India has revised the design and printing style of Electronic Voting Machine (EVM) ballot papers to enhance readability and voter clarity. Under amendments made to Rule 49B of the Conduct of Elections Rules, 1961, EVMs will now feature a candidate’s name, election symbol, and a color photograph. This updated format will first be implemented in the upcoming Bihar assembly elections.
The Commission has also introduced several technical improvements for better voter accessibility. The ballot papers will now use bold font size 30 in the international form of Indian numerals for candidate serial numbers and NOTA. All names and NOTA will be printed uniformly in the same font type and size. Additionally, the ballot paper will be printed on higher-quality 70 GSM RGB pink paper, ensuring better durability and clarity, especially in rural and low-light settings.
Officials say this step will smoothen the voting process and reinforce public trust in the electoral system. The use of color photos, larger fonts, and better-quality paper will help voters — especially senior citizens and those in rural areas — make informed choices without confusion. With this, the Election Commission has now implemented 28 new reforms in the last six months, continuing its drive to improve transparency and accessibility in Indian elections.
